LACoFD Catalina Brush Fire Drill - April 2017

In April of 2017 I flew to Santa Catalina Island with members of the Los Angeles County Fire Department to document a large scale brush fire training drill. This was not as much an active fire drill as it was a logistics drill to train in coordinating the movement of fire crews and apparatus to the island of coast of southern California in the event of a substantial brush fire. The Los Angeles County Fire Department, along with the Avalon Fire Department, are responsible for fire suppression on the large island. Transportation to the island was provided by the LASD's Air Rescue 5 and the return trip by LACoFD (Firehawk) Copter 19. © Craig Durling

California Poppy Bloom - Spring 2017

Took a drive up to the Antelope Valley a while back to capture the tail end of the California Poppy "Super" Bloom with my friend and colleague Jeff Zimmerman.  I'd argue that the conditions this spring weren't ideal for a "Super" bloom but it was a beautiful display nonetheless.  Take a drive up next spring!  © Craig Durling

At around noon on March 8, 2014 units from LAFD and Burbank Fire responded to a rollover traffic collision with a sheared hydrant at Cabrini Drive and Glenoaks Blvd in Sun Valley. The driver of a white van, who was transported to an area hospital, reportedly struck several parked cars and trees coming down Cabrini Drive ultimately. One parked vehicle was struck so hard it rolled over onto the grass after being pushed for over 30 feet. No other injuries were reported and the exact cause of the collision is under investigation by LAPD.

"Powerhouse IC" Wildfire - Los Angeles County, CA - June 2, 2013

I was able to make it up for day #3 of the Powerhosue fire in northern Los Angeles County on June 2, 2013.  I split my coverage between video and stills which I'm getting better at.  I still think I need to make a decision when I get on scene to do one or the other but I can't seem to leave that still camera behind!

Here's the latest:

The Powerhouse fire is/was burning in northern Los Angeles County in the Angeles National Forest, Elizabeth, Green Valley area.  The fire began on May 30th and as of June 5th had burned over 32,000 acres and destroyed 24 residences.  There were 141 engines on scene along with 62 fire crews, 24 dozers and 11 air tankers/helicopters.  The fire was 70% contained with total containment expected on June 10th.  Total personnel on scene estimated at 2,077 with only 5 injuries reported.  Fire activity continues to diminish as fuels are being consumed up to the indirect fire lines put in place by fire crews.  Extreme terrain, heavy fuels, consistent wind, and occasional flare-ups have made direct attach on this fire difficult.  Information provided by Inciweb - http://www.inciweb.org/incident/article/3399/18489/

"Acacia I/C" 3-Alarm Apartment House Fire - Glendale, CA - New Years Eve 2011

Our final fire of 2011, this fire started in a garage to the rear of the occupied apartment building in the 800 block of Acacia in Glendale, CA.  The New Years Eve blaze quickly extended into the adjacent apartments which prompted a 3-alarm response to the scene to battle what had become two garage/auto fires as well as involved apartments and fire through the roof of the two-story structure.  Assisting units included assets from the cities of Burbank, Pasadena and South Pasadena.  The extent of damage and injuries as a result of this blaze were unknown at the time of this posting.  Although not immediately attributed to the serial arsonist currently working the LA area, it is believed a subject was apprehended by police as he fled the scene.
